Arteta, hoping for EFL Cup success, could prove a springboard to more silverware

Mikel Arteta hopes victory against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup tomorrow night will spur the club on to claim more silverware.

Arteta has been in charge at the Emirates for five years but has guided Arsenal to just one FA Cup title in that time. And while the EFL Cup is not the Gunners’ number one priority this season, the Spaniard knows that winning is a good habit to get into.

Speaking ahead of the last-eight clash, he said: “I think if you’re winning, it makes something different. These kinds of games are really important. It brings faith, trust and positive energy.

“It makes the right way to go and do something else. It gets the momentum going.

“When you’re winning you run and move on to the next competition.

“The team is always busy every three days.”

Arsenal have faced criticism for not scoring from open play this season and again failed to hit the back of the net in Saturday’s goalless draw with Everton.

“When you’re at a big club there’s pressure and you want to do the best you can,” Arteta added.

“The frustrating part is seeing the incredible things we do and not getting the three points. This is football.

“We have to put the ball in the back of the net. There is very little to say.

“It’s always the story, you don’t talk about it when you score five. It’s normal but it doesn’t change for us.

Arsenal will be without left-backs Oleksandr Zinchenko and Riccardo Calafiori against Palace while Declan Rice is “good” but will not play.
