The Arsenal squad was hit by illness last week, with Kai Havertz missing the Gunners’ previous two outings as a result. Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Declan Rice are also reported to be affected.
Arteta will be hoping his players are in better shape on Tuesday given Newcastle’s physicality.
On the injury front, Ethan Nwaneri has been sidelined for several weeks after sustaining a muscle problem. Brighton. The teenager joins Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu in the treatment room.
Jurien Timber is eligible to return from suspension.
Arsenal Predicted Lineup vs Newcastle (4-3-3): Rye; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelley; Party, Rice, Odegaard; Martinelli, Jesus, Trossard.
Howe will be pleased with what he saw from Sven Botman on Saturday, the Dutchman making his second return from a long-term knee injury. With Fabian Shore still suspended, the centre-back could be forced into another start in quick succession.
Given the minutes Howe’s starters have gotten in recent weeks, there could be a midfield shuffle. Bruno Guimaraes is suspended, so former Gunner Joe Willock could come into the squad. Harvey Barnes could also be moved to the frontline, but Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon should retain their places.
The visitors are still without Callum Wilson, Jamal Lascelles and Emile Croft. Nick Pope is a suspect.
Newcastle Predicted Lineup vs Arsenal (4-3-3): Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Joelinton, Willock; Gordon, Isaac, Barnes.
This looks like a big game for Arsenal, who will need to take the lead with them at St James’ Park in February. Howe, by contrast, will be content with a draw and we’ve seen the Newcastle boss flummox his Spanish counterpart on several occasions since taking the Magpies job.
Arsenal have failed to score in three of their previous five meetings against Newcastle.
Tuesday’s visitors are back to their worst and most powerful form, but Hove will need to turn around for the sake of a long-term advantage in midweek which should open the door for the hosts.
They will have to work their way out of it, but Arsenal’s desperation could get them over the line on home soil. Whether a one-goal advantage will be enough is a different story.
