Andre Russell recently came as a surprise when he announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kolkata Knight Riders have released this powerful all-rounder ahead of the upcoming IPL auction and will be one of the biggest names in the auction.
However, West Indies decided to announce his retirement from the IPL, shocking the fans. This decision ends a very successful partnership between player and team. Andre Russell made his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals in 2012 before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014.
He joined the series from that point on until his release last month. Andre Russell was part of the team’s 2014 and 2024 championship teams. Russell has been one of the best T20 all-rounders in the world over the past decade or so and was the MVP of the 2019 IPL.

Andre Russell retires:
Although Andre Russell was not at his best in the recent IPL season, not many expected him to retire. The West Indies star has now revealed the reasons behind his decision. In a recent interview, Russell said he wanted to exit the game at a high point rather than wait for his decline to become apparent.
“When I made the decision, I felt it was the best decision for me. I didn’t want to fade away, I wanted to leave a legacy. I believe it’s better to retire while people are still asking ‘why’ than to get to a stage where they say ‘well, yeah, you should have retired three or four years ago’. Andre Russell said.
Although Russell has retired from the IPL, his association with Kolkata Knight Riders will continue. The franchise announced Russell as their “power coach” ahead of IPL 2026. He will be part of a new support team led by new head coach Abhishek Nayar. Tim South will serve as bowling coach, with Shane Watson and Dwayne Bravo serving as assistant coach and mentor respectively.
