Apple and iPhone owners in the United States are now able to carry a copy of their US passport on their device, which they can use at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 US airports when traveling domestically.
The feature, known as Digital ID, used to be Office has partnered as part of 26 live iOSand adds passports to the list of existing government IDs supported by Apple Wallet. The company is targeting about a dozen states and Puerto Rico, with more on the way.
Using Apple Wallet’s Digital ID, users can create and present an ID, even if they don’t have a real ID driver’s license. The ID does not replace a physical passport, and it is not currently supported for international travel or border crossings.

Users can add their passport to the wallet by tapping the “Add” (+) button in the wallet app, then selecting “driver’s licenses or driver’s cards.” From there, select Digital ID and follow the steps to complete the setup process, which includes using the back page of their passport to ensure the authenticity of the Passport. Users must also take a selfie for verification and then complete a series of facial and head movements for added security.
Support for IDs in Apple Wallet is the last obstacle that stands in the way of replacing iPhones for a physical wallet, because it can now prevent payment cards, identification cards, and passes.
Presenting Apple’s new digital ID in person works just like using Apple Pay. You can double tap the side button or home button to access your wallet, then select digital ID. Viewing the iPhone or Apple must be performed near an identity reader, and users will use Face ID or Touch ID to verify their information. Users can also see what identity information is requested when completing the verification process.

The feature is still in beta, as it has not been fully rolled out to all device readers at TSA checkpoints at this time. (The TSA website offers a list of states that support mobile ID but still advise travelers to bring their physical ID.)

Apple says that users will finally be able to present their digital ID to businesses and organizations where they need to verify their age, both online.
May include event areas or bars, where users must present their ID at the door to verify if they are of drinking age. Online, websites that restrict adult content can also use Apple’s Apis to verify the age of users. For example, if a user wants to order alcohol for delivery through a service like Uber food, they can verify their ID during the ordering process.
In both cases, users can confirm that they are over 21 without having to share personal information such as their name, address, or birthday.
Apple says it can’t see when or where a user presents their ID or what data is shared. In addition, users do not need to unlock their phone or hand it over to present their ID, as it works like apple payment.
