Anthony Joshua is still recovering in a Nigerian hospital from a car crash that killed two of the British boxer’s close friends.
Joshua’s personal trainer Kevin Latif Ayodele and fitness coach Sina Gami were killed when they collided with a stationary vehicle on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.
Social media videos showed the two-time heavyweight boxing champion and Olympic gold medalist grimacing in pain as he was pulled from the wreckage.
Joshua suffered “minor injuries” in the fatal accident and remains under observation at a Lagos hospital in a stable condition.
The extent of Joshua, 36,’s injuries has not yet been determined, and it is unclear when Joshua will be discharged from hospital.
Joshua’s family said they were ‘devastated’
Joshua, who is of Nigerian descent, is in the country celebrating his recent fight with Jake Paul.
After a 15-month absence from boxing, Joshua marked his return with a sixth-round knockout victory over the YouTuber-turned-boxer in Miami on December 19.
Residents of Sagamu, Ogun State, where Joshua’s relatives live, expressed shock at Monday’s incident.
Adedamola Joshua, uncle of Anthony Joshua’s father, told The Associated Press: “Everybody was close to him (Anthony Joshua) and he was very liberal among the people. So it was a big shock to us.”
Oluwatoyin Omoleye, a resident of Sagamu, said he was “very sad because Anthony is going home to celebrate with our people here.”
‘Joshua needs time to process tragedy’
Sky Sports Boxing’s Andy Scott:
“AJ remains in hospital under observation and recovering. I have contacted their team privately. But it is difficult for everyone to deal with at the moment.
“Social media is a blessing and a curse for stories like this – there’s a lot of detail out there, but there’s also some disinformation.
“I’m not going to speculate other than to say that Joshua needs a lot of time and space to deal with physical and mental issues.
“It’s hard to put into words or even imagine what he’s going through right now.”
