Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital less than three days after a car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his close friends.
Joshua is recovering at home in Nigeria, according to information released late Wednesday by the local governments of Lagos and Ogun states.
The 36-year-old man was sitting in the back seat of the car. Crashed into a stationary truck on a main road near Lagoskilling his friends Kevin ‘Latif’ Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
Ayodele is Joshua’s personal trainer and Gami is the strength and conditioning coach.
Joshua suffered minor injuries in the accident and his mother paid her respects at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon, the statement said.
“Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon and, despite his heavy heart and emotions over the loss of two close friends, he was deemed clinically fit to recover at home,” a statement posted on X read.
The post also expressed gratitude to the team of doctors and medical staff at Ikoyi Lagoon Hospital who treated Joshua and the injured.
It added: “The quality of care and professionalism is truly commendable.”
Hearn expresses ‘huge shock’ to Joshua’s family
Joshua, who is of Nigerian descent, is in the country celebrating his recent fight with Jake Paul.
After a 15-month absence from boxing, Joshua marked his return with a sixth-round knockout victory over the YouTuber-turned-boxer in Miami on December 19.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn paid tribute to Ayodele, also known as Raz, and Gami in an Instagram post, writing: “RIP Raz and Xena. Your energy and loyalty will be sorely missed along with so many other great qualities.”
“Prayers for strength and guidance to all their family, friends and of course AJ during this very difficult time.”
Residents of Sagamu, Ogun State, where Joshua’s relatives live, expressed shock at Monday’s incident.
Anthony Joshua’s father’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua tells us Associated Press: “Everybody was very close to him (Anthony Joshua) and he was very liberal among the people. So it was a big shock to us.”
Oluwatoyin Omoleye, a resident of Sagamu, said he was “very sad because Anthony is going home to celebrate with our people here.”
