If you’re traveling for the holidays today, I hope you’re not flying American Airlines, because it’s going to be a tough day. Earlier this morning, the airline told X that all of its flights were now grounded, but since then the Federal Aviation Administration has the stop was liftedoriginally issued at the airline’s request. Despite the fact that things are back to normal, there is a good chance that these disruptions will have ripple effects that make a busy day of travel even more difficult.
as The Verge noticed, a notice posted by the Federal Aviation Administration confirms that there will be a “national groundstop” for all AA flights; it also says that this termination is at “company request.”
We are currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights. Your safety is our top priority, once this is fixed, we will have you safely on your way to your destination.

Other than the FAA notice and American Airlines’ post on X, no real reason was given for the delay. But since the grounding is removed, CNN reported that an American Airlines spokesman said the stoppage was due to a “vendor technology issue” that has now been “resolved and flights are continuing.”
Update, 9:15AM ET: This story has been updated to note that the ground stop has been resolved.
