Oleksandr Usyk has remained tight-lipped about his future, while rising Australian star Jai Opetaia has set his sights on a fight with the heavyweight world champion.
Usyk and promoter Alex Krasiuk interviewed sky sports It comes less than a month after Ukrainian boxer Tyson Fury successfully defended his world heavyweight title at Saturday night’s Ring Magazine Awards.
Uisk, who has been linked with meeting the winner of the Daniel Dubois-Joseph Parker IBF heavyweight title fight on February 22, has also previously hinted that he might drop back to lightweight, stating that he is currently is “resting,” and it’s unknown what will ultimately happen next for him.
Krasiuk then added: “You never know. I don’t know; we don’t know.”
“It’s time to relax, it’s time to rest, and then after Dubois fights Parker, I think Parker is going to win, we just don’t know what’s going to happen next. So now it’s just time to relax.”
Dubois took the IBF belt vacated by Usyk when he defeated Anthony Joshua last September. Calling for an uncontested showdown with UsykHolds WBO, WBA and WBC gold belts.
Another fighter who has expressed a willingness to fight Usyk in the future is IBF lightweight champion Opetaia, who defended his belt against David Nyika in Australia on Wednesday, highlighting the to their ever-increasing status.
Opetaia, 29, is currently looking to emulate Usyk and become the undisputed lightweight champion.
Asked if he would jump at the chance to fight Usyk at heavyweight if given the opportunity, Oppetaya said: “Absolutely.
“It’s something I’ll take with both hands, a fight like this. It’s a huge opportunity for myself.
“With respect to Usyk, I think he’s one of the best fighters of our generation, but I’d love to test myself and move up there.”
In the cruiserweight division, Opetaia said he will next face WBA and WBO world champion Gilberto Ramirez.
“I love this fight,” he said.
“I’m pursuing the unification fight, so hopefully I can be one of them.”
