Albacete 3-2 Real Madrid: Arbeloa endures nightmare start

The result will put the new Madrid boss under huge pressure.

Alvaro Arbeloa endured a nightmare debut Real Madrid As coach, Los Blancos suffered a stunning 3-2 defeat against second-tier Albacete. King’s Cup.

Arbeloa was quickly appointed by Madrid after Xabi Alonso was relieved of his duties following the Supercopa de Espana final defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona.

But a Madrid side far from full strength suffered humiliation at the hands of one side 17th in SegundaAlbacete won thanks to Jeft Bentanker’s superb 95th-minute winner.

Javi Villar fired Albacete into the lead in the last-16 tie, only for Franco Mastantuno to quickly equalise.

Bentanker’s far-post finish restored Albacete’s advantage eight minutes from the end of normal time, before Gonzalo Garcia’s 91st-minute header erased it again.

Yet there was a final twist to the tale as a long clearance sent Bentanker free down the left channel and into the box. After seeing his first effort blocked, he produced a superbly composed follow-up that looped into the far corner to send Carlos Belmonte into raptures and condemn Arbeloa to a disappointing start that would immediately put him under considerable pressure.

Albacete beat Real Madrid

Key chances proved hard to come by for much of the first half as Madrid were let down by their lower-league hosts.

Fed Valverde fired wide early on with a long-range effort, but Madrid’s attack probably didn’t quite pan out, and Albacete produced a warning shot when Dani Bernabeu headed down the left on a fine individual run but failed to find the telling finish.

Yet Albacete took the lead in spectacular fashion in the 42nd minute as Villar met Jose Carlos Lazo’s corner with a near-post header.

Albacete’s joy was short-lived, however, as Mastantuno restored parity with a routine finish from close range after Lizoin kept out Dean Huijsen’s header.

A member of Albacete’s coaching staff was shown a red card at half-time after they objected to allowing Madrid to take the corner they scored in the third minute of injury time after being signaled by the fourth official.

However, Madrid struggled to build much in the way of momentum in the second half following the leveller, although Gonzalo Garcia wasted a gilt-edged chance when he headed narrowly wide from a corner.

And Madrid will regret missing it as Bentanker took full advantage of their inability to deal with the ball in the box as he fired a half-volley under Andriy Lunin.

Extra time seemed inevitable when Garcia headed home from Arda Guler’s corner after intense Madrid pressure. However, Bentancor saved Albacete from an extra half-hour challenge with a goal that would see his name written into club folklore as Madrid’s season reached a new low.
