A 13-year-old boy died Thursday after being mauled by a shark at a popular beach on Brazil’s east coast, the state government said in a statement.
The attack took place off the coast of Chifre Beach in the Brazilian tourist center of Pernambuco, the State Shark Incident Monitoring Committee (CEMIT) he said in a press release.
The boy was taken to the hospital, but he “did not survive his injuries,” added CEMIT.
dr. Levy Dalton, who treated the victim, said the boy was bitten on the right thigh before he went into cardiorespiratory arrest, UOL Notícias Brasil reported.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t resuscitate him, (…) unfortunately we couldn’t do much for him,” Dalton told reporters, according to the media release.
Brazilian outlet G1 identified victim as Deivson Rocha Dantas. According to G1, the boy’s cousin, Lídia Emanuele, told TV Globo that the shark “ate almost his entire leg” and that he was pulled from the water by others who were around the same age.
Dozens of beaches along Pernambuco’s turquoise coast have been issued shark warnings, authorities said, adding that Chifre Beach has issued four such signs for beachgoers.
Despite this, CEMIT said it would step up shark monitoring after the boy’s death and reinstate a suspended program to track the creatures with microchips.
CEMIT
More than 80 shark attacks have been reported in Pernambuco since 1992, 26 of which were fatal, including the boy who died on Thursday, CEMIT said.
Last week, a 12-year-old boy who was bitten by a shark in the Australian port of Sydney died his injuries, his family said.
Earlier this month, the 56-year-old Minnesota woman dies after a shark attack in the US Virgin Islands.
