A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern Mexico on Sunday US Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The quake was about five miles from Coalcoman de Vazquez Pallares, a municipality of about 20,000 people about 572 miles west of the capital, Mexico City. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 53 miles.

said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum social media platform X that the national emergency services reported that “there are no new developments and they are initiating review protocols” at Coalcoman.

Mexico lies on five tectonic plates which makes it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, especially on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

In 1985, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake centered on the Pacific coast devastated much of central and southern Mexico, killing thousands and causing severe damage in Mexico City.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake on September 19, 2017 killed 369 people, most of them in the capital.
