India produced an impressive display to seal a massive 295-run win over Australia in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium in Perth. With the win, India ended Australia’s unbeaten run at the venue since 2018, bouncing back strongly from their recent 0-3 series loss to New Zealand.

The match ended quickly in the final session of Day 4, with India needing just five overs to claim the last two Australian wickets. Washington Sundar bowled Nathan Lyon for a wicket, and debutant Harshit Rana dismissed Alex Carey for 36 to seal victory, chasing Australia for 238 all out in pursuit of 510.

India’s grit despite tough start

India’s first innings was far from ideal as they were bowled out for 150 runs. Josh Hazlewood wreaked havoc with figures of 4/29, while debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy fought back valiantly with 41 in his first outing. Rishabh Pant contributed 37 runs and KL Rahul showed resilience before his controversial dismissal.

However, India’s bowlers faltered in the fading Perth light. Jasprit Bumrah (3/30) fought back brilliantly, claiming a valuable wicket for Steve Smith’s golden duck. Debutant Harshit Rana (1/16) and Mohammad Siraj bowled Australia out for 104 and gave India a slender lead of 46 runs.

Jaiswal and Kohli shone in the second innings

India capitalized on their narrow advantage with a commanding batting performance in the second innings. Yashaswi Jaiswal, who had earlier been dismissed for a wicket, rescued himself with 161 with his fourth Test century. Along with KL Rahul (77), Jaiswal put on a massive opening partnership of 201 runs.

Virat Kohli then piled on the misery for Australia Not out on 100, with his 30th Test century. India declared on 487/6, giving Australia a tempting target of 510 runs.

Australia floundered under pressure

Australia faced a tough task and started their chase in a disastrous manner, losing three quick wickets in the last 3 days. Nathan McSweeney’s forgettable debut ended with a wicket, when Marnus Lebuschne fell LBW to an inswinger.

Despite valiant efforts from Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47), Australia’s batsmen failed against India’s relentless bowling. Bumrah (3/42) and Siraj (3/51) were instrumental in dismantling the Australian lineup.

Looking forward to the main performance and more
