Terrence Crawford retires after defeating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Coach Brian McIntyre was instrumental in the game plan that made this possible.
“Bud” Crawford moved up two weight classes from his previous fight to challenge Canelo for the undisputed super middleweight world championship, winning by unanimous decision to become the fifth heavyweight champion.
The 38-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, announced his retirement soon after. An undefeated run came to an end after their combined efforts in the amateur ranks, which was managed from start to finish by coach “BoMac”.
Canelo will return in September In pursuit of more world titles, Bomack believes he has one man who can prevent that from happening: Lester Martinez.
talking Professional TV boxThe well-regarded coach talked about his chances of rushing and said Crawford must improve his game when sparring with Martinez ahead of the Alvarez fight.
“People are starting to talk about Lester Martinez. It’s great, man. He fits right in there. I personally think he can beat Canelo. You know we’ve got the blueprint, right?
“He definitely (helped Crawford). It was great work. That’s what’s great about Bader, you see, by changing his style, what he did to work with Lester. Lester, one of his weaknesses (could have) worked against him at times, but (he) overcame that and pushed Terrance to a level where he needed to go and go out and do what he wanted to do in the (Canelo) fight. It’s amazing.”
Martinez fought Christian Mbili for the interim WBC title in the Canelo-Crawford undercard, which ended in a draw. Mbili, who retained the interim belt, has now been promoted to official champion following Crawford’s retirement.
A rematch was ordered after the fight and may still take place, with Mbili now weighing up his first defensive options, the other of which is Canelo himself.
Guatemala’s Martinez is already 30 years old and has only played 20 games into his season, with many expecting him to win a world title, especially with Bomack’s brains in the corner. If given the opportunity to face the Mexican idol, the coach believes he can solve this problem again.
