Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’

At the time the Mummy franchise arrived in the 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, a lot has changed. Basically, the co-star of the franchise, Rachel Weisz, is now an Oscar winner and a mother. So, when the script came around for a new installment brought him back and Brendan Fraser’s characters, Weisz turned down. Maria Bello then took over the role, and while the resulting film was a hit, The Mummy buried after that.

That is, until 2028. In 2028, two decades after the previous installment, Weisz and Fraser will reprise their roles in the monster-inspired adventure series under the direction of Radio Silence, aka Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The return of the two stars, however, raises the question of the canon. Do the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor world count of The Mother 4? And, otherwise, it is The Mother 4 Granted Mom 3?

“Well, Rachel is in it,” Bettinelli-Olpin said Fun every week about the upcoming film.

“That should answer the question for you,” added Gillett. And although it literally does not answer the question, it certainly means that the new film will ignore the events of the third film and will only consider the canon of films by Rachel Weisz. Sorry, Ms. Beautiful.

Now, to be fair, this is almost certainly the right choice. There are probably many, many people in the world who don’t even know the third Mummy the movie came out. Everyone knows the first one, of course. Especially, since there is a recent increase in popularity that everyone but wants this new one to exist. And most people know the second, Mom came backbecause this is the acting debut of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Also, it has a prequel, The Scorpion King.

But the third film? Directed by Rob Cohen and starring Jet Li as the Mummy? Not very expensive. It did well financially, grossing over $100 million in the US and over $400 million worldwide, but that wasn’t enough to sustain. The Mummy alive.

But there have to be fans out there, right? Every film has its fans. And, to the fans, we’re sorry. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor not, apparently, canon of the new, future Mummy. That new movie is scheduled to release on May 19, 2028.
