Philip Lewis has been removed as head coach Flemish Three months after leading them to the Copa Libertadores title and hours after an 8-0 win in the Campeonato Carioca.
The former Brazil The full-back, who signed a two-year contract extension in December, is widely regarded as one of the best youth coaches in world football but his successful 17-month spell at the Rio de Janeiro giants is now over.
After succeeding former Brazil coach Tite in September 2024, he guided them to the Libertadores and Serie A double. However, their stock fell following defeats to Corinthians in the Copa do Brasil and defeats in both legs of the Recopa Sudamericana against Lanus.
Flamengo hammered fourth-tier side Madureira to reach the Campionato Carioca final on Monday night but it wasn’t enough and the ax fell shortly after.
read the club statement: “Flamengo announced that, as of this Tuesday (March 3), Philippe Luiz will not continue in charge of the professional team. Along with that, Ivan Palanco (technical assistant) and Diogo Linhares (physical trainer) are also leaving the club.
“Flamengo would like to thank former player and coach Philippe Luiz for all that has been achieved and shared on this journey. The club wishes him success and good luck in the rest of his professional career.”
Flamengo announced after the press conference
Flamengo also allowed Philippe Luiz to hold a post-match press conference before telling him he was out.
The 40-year-old came under fire from fans during the game and expressed his understanding for their irritation.
He said: “I understand (the fans) completely. I always like to remember when I was young I wore a Flamengo shirt, I’m a Flamengo fan just like them. When I put myself in the position of first player, it’s a life choice, I knew the pressure that comes with it.
“As a coach, from the moment I wanted to start here and the club opened the door for me, I knew it was what I wanted. I knew the fans believed in me, gave me a lot of faith, convinced the board to leave me in the office.
“I don’t have this profile to shout about but I respect the badge.”
Philippe Luiz makes an attractive proposition for many European clubs, particularly in Spain thanks to two spells with Atlético Madrid either side of a short stint at Chelsea.
