Vince Vaughn finally took his own advice. He doubled down.
on Swingersthe movie produced by Vaughn a star, he famously told his friend who was playing blackjack (played in the future Star Wars and Marvel director Jon Favreau), “You always double to 11.” Well, it must be 11 somewhere, because the Wedding Crashers and Freaky the star doubled of the number of roles he plays in a new time-traveling gangster action comedy.
The movie is called Mike & Nick & Nick & Alicewhich is a bit confusing until you see the recently released trailer. In it, Vaughn plays a gangster named Nick who, together with his friend Mike (James Marsden), tries to correct a terrible night involving a woman they love, named Alice (Eiza González). This correction involves time travel, so there are two Nicks in the movie. Hence, the title. It makes more sense if you watch the very entertaining trailer, which is unfortunately age-restricted due to some language and violence, but it’s not too wild.
We love any time travel movie because it makes everything unpredictable. Even a bad movie, if it has some time travel in it, is usually not so bad. But here, writer-director BenDavid Grabinski (who did the terrible Scott Pilgrim Departs series) put that structure into a gangster movie, which is also an action movie as well as a comedy. That’s a weird kind of mash-up, but it sure works.
Especially since the titular characters are only the beginning of what is already a stellar cast. In addition to Vaughn, Marsden, and González, there is Keith David (The Thing)Jimmy Tatro (Scream 7)Stephen Root (Office Space)Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat)Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation)Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek)and Arturo Castro (Tron: Ares). Not too dirty.
Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice will have its premiere on South by Southwest later this month, ahead of its debut on Hulu on March 27. Yes, it’s a Hulu exclusive. Which is a bit of a bummer. But we thought the same thing about preytoo, isn’t it?
