The West Indies national cricket team may have experienced heartbreak in their Super 8 match against India in the 2026 T20 World Cup, but their power batsman Rovman Powell wrote history on Sunday, March 1, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
In the 2026 T20 World Cup Super 8 match, Powell scored only 19 balls against India and smashed 34 balls without scoring a single ball. However, the Windies suffered a heartbreaking five-wicket loss to India in their last Super Eight match; as a result, the two-time champions bowed out of the ongoing 2026 T20 World Cup.

Rovman Powell hit three fours and two huge sixes and completed these crucial runs with an excellent strike rate of nearly 179. These two sixes helped him reach 150 sixes in T20I cricket. With this, Powell became the first West Indies player to hit 150 sixes in T20I cricket.

The slugger achieved the feat in T20 Internationals surpassing Nicholas Pooran, who hit 149 sixes in his career. However, Pooran remains the Caribbean country’s T20I run-scoring leader with 2,275 runs in 106 games and 97 innings, including 13 fifties, with a best score of 98.

Rovman Powell’s solid T20 record
Powell is also the Windies’ second-highest scorer in T20I cricket, having scored 2,261 runs in 117 T20I innings so far. He averaged nearly 26 points per game and had a field goal percentage of over 141. He also scored 1 century and 10 fifties in this format.
In the ongoing T20 World Cup, Powell has scored 149 runs in six innings at an average of 29.80 and a strike rate of over 147. In his long T20 career, he has hit 394 sixes in 295 innings and now he needs just six more sixes to reach the mammoth mark of 400 sixes in the format.
Powell is also approaching another major milestone. He has scored 5,944 runs in T20 cricket so far and now needs just 56 more runs to reach 6,000 T20 runs.
India reaches semi-finals of 2026 T20 World Cup, West Indies crashed out
Speaking of this game, Caribbean got off to a great start. Roston Chase scored 40 runs off 25 balls, including 5 fours and 1 six. Captain Shai Hope scored 32 off 33 balls, including three fours and a six. Both scored 68 runs in the first match against India in Kolkata.
But things change quickly. West Indies fell to 119/4 in 14.1 overs. Shimron Hetmyer tried to improve the team by scoring 27 points in a hurry from 12 balls. Then, Jason Holder Powell made 37 of 22 shots and 34 of 19 shots, showing some combat effectiveness.
The duo scored 76 runs in just 35 balls as West Indies posted 195 for 4 in 20 overs in the Super 8 tournament. Chasing the target, India sealed the match by 5 wickets on the back of Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97-run knock and entered the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup, knocking out West Indies.
