struggle

  • Deputy Prime Minister Oleksi Kuleba said Russia attacked port infrastructure in Ukraine’s southern Odessa region overnight, causing fires and damaging equipment, warehouses and food containers.
  • Russian news agencies quoted the head of Russia’s state nuclear company as saying a partial ceasefire had been agreed near the Russian-controlled Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to allow for repairs to power lines.
  • Romania’s Defense Ministry said Ukraine shot down a drone near the Romanian border as Russia attacked Danube port infrastructure.
  • Romania said it dispatched fighter jets and the drone came down 100 meters (110 yards) from the Romanian village of Chiliaviche, on the opposite bank of the Danube River from Ukraine.
  • Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency quoted sources from the Ministry of Defense as saying that Russian troops have taken control of the village of Biliakivka in the Dnepropetrovsk region of eastern Ukraine.
  • Ukraine’s military said it attacked an oil depot in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region overnight, causing a fire at the facility.
  • Firefighters are trying to control a fire at an oil refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, local officials said early Saturday.
  • Ukraine is considering a partnership with allies to build an air defense system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles and address a critical shortage of U.S.-made Patriot system ammunition, the country’s defense minister said.
  • Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okuzeto Abraqua said that 55 Ghanaians have been killed in fighting in Ukraine and that some 272 citizens of the African country are believed to have been lured to Ukraine to fight for Russia since 2022.

regional security

  • The Swedish military intercepted a suspected Russian drone off the country’s southern coast, while a French aircraft carrier docked in Malmo, officials said.
  • Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was “ridiculous” to suggest that a drone electronically disabled near a French aircraft carrier in Sweden earlier this week was Russian.
  • The European Commission said Croatia is assessing whether it can legally import seaborne Russian crude to supply Hungary and Slovakia through its Adria pipeline.
  • Croatia’s move comes after oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia, the only EU countries still importing Russian oil, were halted last month due to damage caused by Russian drone strikes in Ukraine through the Ukrainian leg of the Druzhba pipeline.
  • In a video posted on Facebook, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to allow Hungarian and Slovak inspectors to repair and restart the Druzhba pipeline.

  • President Zelensky said he had not been offered nuclear weapons by Britain or France, but added that he would “happily” accept the offer after Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service accused both countries of working to deliver nuclear bombs to Kiev.
  • The Polish parliament approved a law to implement the EU’s Security Action in Europe (SAFE) defense procurement program aimed at improving member states’ military preparedness capabilities.

economy

  • The International Monetary Fund said its executive board had approved an $8.1 billion four-year loan to Ukraine, laying the foundation for a broader $136.5 billion international support package. The World Bank estimates that Ukraine will need $588 billion for post-war reconstruction.
  • Economists say Russia is grappling with huge defense spending and deepening structural challenges, including labor shortages and high inflation.
  • Major Ukrainian steelmaker ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih said it will close another unit as the energy crisis worsens due to Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine’s power system.

peace talks

  • Bilateral talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Geneva ended on Thursday, with Kiev saying it was preparing for the next round of talks aimed at ending the war.
  • Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said on the 10th that discussions were taking place in two forms: a separate meeting with the United States, and a trilateral meeting involving the United States and Switzerland.
  • Umerov said the participants spoke with President Zelensky and were working to ensure that the next trilateral meeting with Russia on a solution is “as substantive as possible.”

Politics and Diplomacy

  • Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has begun advising the Ukrainian government on economic revival as Kyiv works to rebuild its energy sector by next winter.
  • Finland, Ukraine and the Czech Republic will skip the opening ceremony of the Milan Cortina Paralympics in protest at the fact that Russian athletes are competing under their national flags while the war in Ukraine is still ongoing.
  • German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that “diplomacy with Russia cannot succeed at the moment” and that more emphasis should be placed on protecting Ukraine from aggression by Moscow.
