Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon confirmed Rumler’s resignation in a statement Thursday and said he respects her decision.

“Throughout her tenure, Kathy has been an outstanding general counsel and we appreciate her contributions and sound advice on a variety of significant legal matters for the company,” Solomon said in a statement provided to Al Jazeera.

“As one of the most accomplished professionals in her field, Kathy was also a mentor and friend to many of us, and she will be missed,” he said.

Rummler, who served as White House counsel under President Obama, told the Financial Times on Thursday that she would resign as chief legal officer and general counsel at the end of June.

Rümmler told the newspaper that media attention on her relationship with Epstein had become a “distraction.” Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

She has previously expressed regret for knowing Epstein and has denied providing legal representation to the financier or defending him against any third party.

Rümmler is just the latest in a long line of high-profile figures to step down from prominent positions or face legal scrutiny over the Epstein case.
