Although Powell was born and raised in San Diego, California, he is eligible to represent Jamaica. According to an article by Anthony Jiang of the Miami Herald, the NBA star’s father was born in Kingston.
“This is absolutely a historic moment not only for us but for Jamaica and really reignites the culture and love of basketball in Jamaica,” Powell said in an interview in August 2025.
Since moving to Miami, Powell has also adapted to the Jamaican national basketball team.
“It’s getting me settled in. It’s great to be welcomed here. Not only the Jamaican national team and that side of the culture that I’m embracing and learning about. But here in South Florida, checking into the hotel, people already know who I am, welcome me and are excited about me joining the Heat.”
Norman Powell’s All-Star Game debut will be extra special because he will be representing his legacy on the big stage. He will also reunite with former Toronto Raptors teammate Pascal Siakam.
How is Norman Powell doing this season?
Norman Powell proved last season that he is worthy of being selected to the 2025 NBA All-Star Game. However, he is one of the most neglected. This season, he performed even better and was selected to the All-Star for the first time. In 45 games, he averaged 23.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
Before the NBA announced its All-Star reserves, Powell revealed he believed he deserved it.
“I think so, I think I’ve definitely proven that,” Powell said. “The last year’s learning, not to dwell on whether I can succeed, I want to succeed. I think I should succeed.”
“My peers in the league, after games and stuff like that, they tell me I’m an All-Star and I should be there, so hopefully that will happen for me this year.”
Norman Powell stepped up for the Heat in the absence of Tyler Herro. Herro only played in 11 games due to various injuries, and Powell made the most of his opportunity.
