The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has raised concerns about allegations that Apple censors conservative content in the Apple News app.

In one LETTERS to Apple CEO Tim Cook, FTC chair Andrew Ferguson was quoted reports from the Media Research Center, a right-leaning think tank, accusing Apple of excluding right-leaning outlets from the top 20 articles in the Apple News feed.

“These reports raise serious questions about whether Apple News is acting in accordance with its terms of service and representations to consumers (…) I hate and condemn any attempt to censor content for ideological reasons,” Ferguson’s letter reads.

Ferguson, a critic of Big Tech appointed by Trump to lead the competition regulator, noted that the FTC does not have the power to ask Apple to take ideological or political positions in curating news, but he said that if the company’s practices are “inconsistent” with the terms of service or “reasonable expectations of consumers,” it may have violated the FTC Act.

Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (another Trump appointee critical of Big Tech), supported Ferguson’s stance, writing, “Apple has no right to suppress conservative views in violation of the FTC Act.”

Ferguson urged Apple to conduct a “comprehensive review” of its terms of service and ensure that the content curated by Apple News complies with its policies, and to “take immediate corrective action” if the curation is out of line.

The letter comes a day after President Donald Trump IMPARTED the report of the Media Research Center on its social media platform, Truth Social. Trump has repeatedly accused Big Tech companies of censoring right-leaning content, even as many major platforms have reversed the many measures to curb fake news and disinformation they imposed in the years before his second stint in the White House.

Apple’s relationship with the Trump administration has oscillated between warm and cold over the past year.
