Fabio Wardley prepares to defend his WBO title for the first time against Daniel Dubois in an all-British heavyweight world title fight. Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed his thoughts on the proposed fight.
Wardley shook up the department In October, he upset Joseph Parker to win the interim WBO title Britain’s four-month stretch without a heavyweight world title came to an end when Usyk fully vacated the WBO belt.
The Ipswich fans’ favorite was promoted to official world champion and ever since, the 31-year-old star has been looking for a showdown to prove his worth as a legitimate title holder and begin his reign in style.
Now it appears Wardley has found his perfect partner, with reports suggesting he will clash with former IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois, who last lost to Oleksandr Usyk in July.
talk with iFL TVEddie Hearn explains why he thinks Dubois’ decision to jump straight into another world title fight may have been a naive one.
“If I were Daniel Dubois, I would come back with a (smaller) fight, but what happens is, you make so much money, you don’t want to take one of those fights again because you’re not really focused on the long term.
“I think sometimes it’s a bit of a bad decision. Daniel Dubois last fought in July against Usyk, which is now eight months ago. So, if he fights in May, he’ll be out of the ring for ten months after being knocked out.
“Daniel DuBois is a guy who, if he has any doubts about himself, or if he’s not 100 percent confident, he’s easier to beat than the other way around.”
Hearn went on to reveal why he thinks the fight will favor Fabio Wardley stylistically, predicting the defending champion will beat Dubois if he can survive the early onslaught.
“Daniel Dubois hits so hard that he can knock anybody out or hurt anybody early, but if you get through two, three or four rounds with him and you start to make him doubt himself, you can knock him out pretty quickly.
“I think Wardley and his team will look at this game and say ‘this was a good game for us’.”
Wardley Dubois is expected to feature for Manchester on Saturday, May 9, while Usyk is currently linked with a shock clash with the club. Dutch Taekwondo Champion Rico Verhoeven on the same day. However, it is unclear whether the Ukrainian three-weight world champion will take the title in this fight.
