India captain Rohit Sharma has announced to the Indian fans that he will participate in the 2027 ICC World Cup. He claimed that the 50-over World Cup was the pinnacle of cricket and that he grew up with this childhood dream and aspired to win it throughout his career.
Indian legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the remaining two formats of international cricket before returning to the 50-over format. Virat Kohli has been in excellent form and he is likely to be a strong contender for India’s place in the next Cricket World Cup in 2027.
The World Cup is scheduled to be held in South Africa, where the steep bounces and unpredictability of the tracks will play a big role and India’s veterans will need to shoulder much of the scoring load. Additionally, they will need extensive experience to deal with South African conditions.

Rohit Sharma secures his place in India squad in 2027
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test matches before returning to India for the ODI series during Australia’s overseas tour. This is the first time India will play a 50-over bilateral match after they participate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Rohit dominated the series against Australia with a commendable half-century and then returned to India to score a couple of half-centuries against South Africa in a three-match one-day series. However, Rohit was out of form against New Zealand.
Rohit’s eligibility for the 2027 World Cup is yet to be approved by the coach and BCCI chief selector as they have clearly mentioned that even experienced batsmen have to prove themselves to make the team. Rohit has also scheduled several other series in 2026, including the England series in June.
Meanwhile, Rohit assured Indian fans that he will still play in the 2027 World Cup despite turning 40 years old. He has regained his lost fitness and will be key to India’s World Cup campaign.
‘I really want that trophy,’ says Rohit Sharma on CWC 2027
Rohit Sharma claims that growing up as a cricketer, he always aspired to win the World Cup with Team India. He claimed that the ODI World Cup used to be the pinnacle of the game as there were no other tournaments like T20 World Cup, IPL or WTC at that time.
“I would definitely like to go out and win the World Cup for my country; that’s something I’ve always looked forward to, I grew up watching this 50-over World Cup,” Rohit said.
“There was no T20 WC, no IPL, no WTC and that was the pinnacle of cricket and it used to be held every four years, so people were desperate; the weight of that trophy was so huge – I really want that trophy so I’m going to do everything in my power and ability to try and work hard and get it,” he added.

Rohit Sharma’s World Cup stats
38-year-old Rohit Sharma is one of India’s greatest run-scorers in the Cricket World Cup. Rohit Sharma has played 28 World Cup matches and has participated in the 2015, 2019 and 2023 World Cups. He accumulated 1575 runs for India and averaged 60.58 in 50-over World Cup matches.
Rohit has scored seven centuries in the International Cricket World Cup and on the other hand, the India opener is also captaining India in the 2023 home World Cup. He led the team to the finals with an unbeaten record, but ultimately lost narrowly to Australia. Hence, he hopes to avenge his 2023 defeat at the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
