High-profile UAE business leader meets lawmakers linking to Epstein ‘torture’ emails

U.S. officials made new revelations about the Epstein dossier on Monday, identifying who they believe were the recipients of a disturbing email sent by the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in which he mentioned an alleged “torture video.”

According to documents recently released by the U.S. Department of Justice, this name is Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem. He is one of the most powerful business figures in the UAE. He maintained a relationship with Epstein for many years, and the content of his communications often contained explicit content.

The latest news comes after revelations from Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky. and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif. The unredacted documents were reviewed Monday at the Justice Department.

Massey posted a screenshot of the email on social media platform X. In the email, Epstein wrote to an edited recipient: “Where are you? Are you okay, I like this torture video.” The reply said: “I am in China and I will be in the United States the second week of May.”

However, the email adds another thread to years of communications between Sulayem and Epstein, which referenced everything from business dealings to politics to sex.

DP World did not respond to CNBC’s request for comment, including whether the company plans to keep Sulayem in his role.

No action has been taken against Sulayem since information about his relationship with Epstein was first released last month.

Canada’s second-largest pension fund told CNBC on Wednesday it would halt future transactions with Dubai-based DP World following the Epstein scandal, saying it had “made it clear to the company that we expect it to understand the situation and take necessary action.”

It was unclear whether international bodies Sulayem was involved with would respond to the disclosures. Sulayem, for example, is listed as an agenda contributor to the World Economic Forum.

As of March 2022, DP World is also a “Champion” of the United Nations Women’s HeForShe coalition, an initiative that encourages men and institutions to support gender equality. Later, a UN Women representative said she was “honored to welcome” Sulayem and DP World to the program to help “lead change and alliances to achieve a gender-equitable world.”

“Becoming a UN Women HeForShe Champion is a huge honor and I feel honored to be working alongside such a respected leader to accelerate gender equality,” Sulayem said.

“I believe in not only attracting, developing and retaining female talent in the trade and logistics industry, but also truly working towards building a global ecosystem that is fair and equitable to all.”

UN Women did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
