Ben Brogio made his Scottish Premiership debut and Falkirk scored the winning goal after Dundee’s Jan Danda missed a penalty in the 0-1 loss in stoppage time.
There was no meaningful goal action in the first half before the on-loan Aston Villa forward volleyed into the net 10 minutes into the second half.
The visitors had a chance to equalize after Joe Bevin was brought down by substitute goalkeeper Nicky Hogarth, but Danda’s shot went wide.
The win brings Falkirk level on points with fifth-placed Hibernian, who have a greater goal difference, while Dundee are now just three points ahead of 11th-placed Kilmarnock.
These teams have had mixed fortunes in the Scottish Cup after going into extra time at the weekend.

After a quick counterattack, Simon Murray found his teammate in the penalty area, but Congreve’s left-footed shot was tame and Hogarth collected it easily.
The atmosphere was lively in the second half, with Brogio breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

Dundee turned up the intensity in their search for an equalizer and Falkirk goalkeeper Hogarth produced a stunning save to deny Joel Cotterill.
The on-loan Swansea winger did well to knock down Luke Graham’s long ball and curled his right-footed shot from the edge of the area into the top corner before the goalkeeper made a crucial intervention.
Ryan Astley headed a free-kick from Dhanda just wide, before on-loan Hearts playmaker Dhanda’s long-range shot went just over the post.
Dundee continued to press but Calvin Miller’s shot from distance was saved by McCracken at the other end.
After VAR intervened, there was still time for a penalty shootout in stoppage time.
Referee David Dickinson believed that goalkeeper Hogarth had brought down Dundee substitute Bevan in the penalty area.
Danda took a penalty kick, but his shot went wide, and the home team ended up with all three points.
