Eckert shocked by Southampton’s ‘crazy’ comeback
When Southampton trailed Leicester City 3-0, some fans may have some uncomfortable flashbacks – especially when the home fans chanted “nine”.
However, this is no longer the Leicester City of old. This is a team without a permanent coach. A team on the verge of entering the relegation zone six points deducted. So even though they were down 3-0, the Saints were still in the game.
For a long time Ross Stewart’s effort just after the hour looked destined to be little more than a consolation. But Leicester’s collapse was only delayed until the final 10 minutes.
Three consecutive goals from Jack Stephens, Ryan Manning and Shay Charles soon created the improbable result, adding to the Foxes’ agony and signaling Southampton’s joy.
Speaking to reporters at full-time, Tonda Eckert revealed what he did at half-time, saying: “I don’t want to talk too much about the structure of the team with the players. I want to leave that to the staff.
“For me, it’s more about dealing with emotions. There are a lot of ideas. I give the players full credit. It’s hard to find the right words because there are so many ideas still buzzing around.
“I can’t explain what happened in the first half. We were just late, poor on the ball and poor on the ball. But we bounced back. It was a crazy night.”
This victory brings the Saints one step closer to the championship championshipA playoff spot, but even that might not be enough to retain one of their most important players.
