Penultimate Burnley ended a 16-match winless run with a seven-minute defeat at Crystal Palace, helping Scott Parker’s side fight back from two goals down in the first half to win 3-2 at Selhurst Park.
It was a night that should have been very different for Oliver Glasner’s side, with Jurgen Strand-Larsen getting off to a fantastic start on his home debut, scoring an early brace.
The first 40 minutes against Burnley were one-way traffic, with Burnley arriving late due to traffic congestion, resulting in a delayed kick-off.
However, after a cold start, Hannibal Mejibre pulled a goal back for Burnley before Jadon Anthony cleverly slotted past Dean Henderson to level the score.
However, it wasn’t all over for Burnley as half-time approached and Bashir Humphreys’ header caused chaos, leading to an own goal from Jefferson Lerma.
Palace made amends for their first-half deficit in the 45th minute as Palace huffed and puffed but could not break down Burnley’s rarely seen tenacious defence. Palace’s only shot on target in the second half came in stoppage time when Martin Dubravka produced a super save to deny Ismaila Sarr an equalizer.
Crystal Palace’s defeat continues Selhurst’s decline, with the Eagles now eight games without a home win and falling to 14th in the rankings.
Burnley are trailing in the Premier League relegation battle, but their comeback has helped them close the gap on 18th-placed West Ham to six points.
Glasner criticizes sloppy defense
crystal palace boss Oliver Glasner Said his team didn’t deserve to win.
“When you’re that sloppy on defense, like we were for these eight or nine minutes, you deserve to lose,” Glasner said.
“We controlled the game, scored beautiful goals and look what the players did. Forgot the basics, forgot the duels, the second goal, the defense, complained about the referee’s decisions, their handball, stopping the game.
“We still complain when we concede goals. Maybe it feels too easy and too low, controlling the game.
“Then we got punished in the second half and we tried everything. But if you give up the game like we did in these eight or nine minutes, you don’t deserve to win, and that’s why we have to accept it. But it was very tough today, to be honest.”
Parker: Not many teams can do what we did tonight
burnley boss Scott Parker After the victory, he was full of praise for his team.
“I can’t describe to you the adversity, the pressure and the obvious frustration that we all faced last weekend at home. Tonight’s performance, I’m sorry, not many teams can do that.
“Not where we are now, not where we are sitting now, and then at home against West Ham United we were almost booed from the sidelines by our own fans. I understand that, I’m not criticizing that, I have my own opinion about it, but to come here and be 2-0 down, it definitely makes sense.”
“I have four sons, and one thing I say to them is exactly that. My young boys, if they ever get a chance to learn, it’s tonight. Because in those moments, in those moments, when people can fold, that group of guys, what you saw tonight, yeah, it was unbelievable.”
