Jujutsu Kaisen continued that the must watch anime this seasonand a lot of that has to do with the studio map which is deep in his arthouse bag this time, adapting the famous Gege Akutami Shonen Jump manga series. In a short time, the show was gone triple platinum on TikTok for this Kill Bill-inspired episode of Makiand it has the average anime fan appreciation of art history aimed at opening it. But the artistic sorcery displayed in the anime’s color scripting is just as impressive as the episodes themselves.
Get views on behind the scenes production material because anime is the only reason any self-respecting fan still keeps X/Twitter around, at least until many artists have jumped on the BlueSky bandwagon. For those who are still using the app and have been able to train their For You page on all things anime, they are greeted by weekly key animation drafts for shows like Freeze: Beyond Journey’s End.
While Mappa is no stranger to providing key animation for the world’s movie theaters, playing double duty between its work in Paradise in Hell and Jujutsu Kaisen today, its color script showcases deserve to be framed on the wall of any museum.
I participated in the original painting of the 53rd painting of “Spell Fighter S3”. Thank you MAPPA for giving me this opportunity to participate in this work. I learned a lot from it! pic.twitter.com/aCui27XfPv

In animation, color scripts do a ton of heavy lifting in mapping out the visual aesthetic and emotional cadence of any given scene. Think of it as a road map that defines how a scene is lit, its atmosphere, and its tactile feel before it’s finished in an episode, film, or what have you. In layman’s terms, this is the ambiance and vibe of an animation sequence. And for Jujutsu Kaisenits color scripts are lush color palettes that make you go “Ooh” in a neon-drenched night bar, a golden sunset, or a fight scene that completely strips the color, leaving only red, a la the Maki episode.

We could really go on for days about how Mappa is EXPANDS Jujutsu Kaisenvisual style from a bog-standard shonen in its early seasons to a bespoke anime full of inventive mise en scène in its third season. But as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and Mappa’s heavy lifting, adapting Gege’s sometimes hard-to-decipher manga art, truly speaks for itself.
