BRUSSELS, Feb 11 (Reuters) – The European Commission has imposed additional duties on imported electric vehicles made in China from 2024, although under European Union rules carmakers can now negotiate tariff exemptions for individual electric models imported from China.

In February 2026, the Commission approved, in a first move, a request by Volkswagen’s Cupra brand to exempt its Tavascan coupe SUV, which is made in China, from import tariffs in exchange for a minimum price and an annual quota model.

Chinese automakers are now looking to apply for similar deals for EV models they want to ship to Europe, according to the China-EU Chamber of Commerce.

The EU had earlier cut the final proposed tariffs on China Tesla cars and slightly cut tariffs for other carmakers, after taking into account the companies’ input in its anti-subsidy investigation.

The following tariffs are in addition to the standard 10% EU import duty for cars.
