Ten-man Everton collapsed within eight minutes of the second half and gave up a 1-0 lead on the hour to lose 2-1 to Bournemouth and extend their winless run at home to six games.
David Moyes’ side took the lead through Iliman Ndiaye’s first-half penalty, but poor finishing and poor defending saw Bournemouth find themselves back in trouble.
Everton should have faded into obscurity as Tierno Bari missed two excellent chances in the first and second half – hitting a sitter wide after Djordje Petrovich had sent James Garner’s free-kick into his path. Barry’s close-range shot was blocked by Alex Jimenez just after half-time, but the Everton forward should still have scored.
Everton were forced to pay and Bournemouth’s equalizer came from Ray Young – who was awarded a penalty for a clumsy foul on Jarrad Branthwaite. He received a specialist cross from Adrian Truffaut and headed home at the far post.
It was Rayang’s third goal in three games since taking over from Antoine Semenho – a goal against Aston Villa and an assist against Wolves last weekend.
Bournemouth turned the tables two minutes later when James Hill produced two fine blocks early in the second quarter to deny passes from Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, passing to Amine Adli who headed into an empty net.
After a VAR check, substitute Enes Unal was involved in the shot from an offside position, but the referee upheld the referee’s decision to score on the field.
Things went from bad to worse for Everton five minutes later when Adderly fired in and was brought down by Jack O’Brien. Referee Andy Madeley showed a red card for the last defender despite being well away from goal.
Everton continued to fight despite being outnumbered, but Barry replacements Berto and Branthwaite failed to convert headers into goals in the penalty area.
Everton were booed by their home fans throughout the match. They have a good chance of finishing in the top six and at least 24 hours ahead of Liverpool. But instead, Bournemouth are level with them on points.
Despite his comeback, Iraola remains unhappy:
bournemouth head coach Anthony Iolara:
“Important three points. We haven’t been good in the last games and this is one you win. Against Aston Villa we were much better than we were today but got a point there.
“We were very close to going 2-0 down and it was going to be very difficult. But we got through those moments and we were a little better off the bench.
“The message at half-time was just to retain more of the ball. We didn’t have the urgency we needed to play and we were happy with 0-0. We can’t be like this. We have to fight them and demand the ball, show character and make things happen.
“We improved a lot – I didn’t like them in the last few minutes because they didn’t need much time to create danger. Every free-kick they took and Pickford was direct. But I wasn’t as happy as I was in the last few games.”
Spike Moyes doesn’t reveal much
everton head coach david moyes:
“To be honest, I’m not ready to evaluate it yet. I’ll look back in a few days to see how things went. We could have won, but we didn’t. We’ll look back on it.
“They had a couple of balls in the penalty area that we didn’t handle. We should have done better.”
On Bournemouth’s winning goal and potential offside: “I’m not the person to ask about the referee’s decision at the moment.
“The guys here are doing great. They’re playing really well. Sometimes you don’t do well. But we play good teams and they don’t make it easy.”
