Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is one of the best prospects in India. The explosive 14-year-old opener has been in fine form since making his debut for Rajasthan Royals in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) and showcased his stellar performance at the recently concluded U-19 World Cup, helping India beat England to win the trophy for the sixth time.
Everyone was impressed with the talent of the young opener. Former England captain Jos Buttler praised the southpaw. Buttler told the Love Cricket podcast that he was the best player and was shocked by the way he batted as a 14-year-old and saw a bright future in the coming years.
Jos Buttler impressed with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Jos Buttler said about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, “I say he’s the best player I’ve ever seen because I thought, who else can do that at 14 years old?” Buttler said. “If he does this at 14, what will he do at 16, 18, 20?”

England pacer Mark Wood also joined Buttler’s podcast, acknowledging the boldness of Jos Buttler’s comments, replying: “That’s a pretty big statement on your part.” He then asked Suryavanshi if he could become India’s absolute superstar, or if he would be derailed by early expectations.
However, Jos Buttler has backed the youngster’s potential. He also pointed out that Sooryavanshi has made his mark on bigger stages like IPL and U-19 World Cup finals. “I don’t understand how it can’t be possible for him. He has played the game… He hit a hundred in the IPL. He hit his first ball in the IPL and hit a six,” Buttler said.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a game changer
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi performed brilliantly in the U-19 World Cup final against the Three Lions. In the final, he smashed 175 off 80 balls and when he batted, India’s expected score was over 500 runs. The left-hand opener hit 15 fours and as many sixes in an explosive innings that took the game away from England in the final over.
For his outstanding performance in the final and throughout the match, he won the Player of the Tournament and Player of the Match awards. The Bihar-born cricketer ended with 439 runs at an average of around 62.7, a strike rate of 169.49, and scored 3 fifties and a century.
Vaibhav sets record in IPL
Vaibhav created history in the IPL 2025 auction by becoming the youngest player ever to sign an IPL contract at the age of 13. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi holds the record of the youngest player to score a century in IPL. He achieved the milestone against Jos Buttler’s team, the Gujarat Titans, so Buttler saw an explosive innings of 101 coming very close off just 38 balls.
He will definitely be one of the players to watch out for in the upcoming IPL season as well. The young batsman also became the youngest centurion in the history of men’s T20 cricket and recorded the second-fastest hundred in IPL history with just 35 deliveries.
