leader of the democratic party Texas State Rep. Gene Wu is facing backlash from conservatives after a video resurfaced in which he called on racial groups to unite against their common “oppressors.”
Resurfaced viral clip from December 31, 2024 episode “Defining America” Podcast Antonio Vargas headlined, “In this part of Texas, 1/3 of residents are undocumented.”
Vargas believed that the future of the United States would be determined by Texas and asked Wu to brief him on the big picture. Wu said one of the powerful forces driving modern politics, especially immigration, is the fear among “whites” in America of being a racial and political minority.
“What’s scary to me is that what’s driving this latest wave of anti-immigrant sentiment is purely white nationalist consciousness,” Wu said.
“There’s a sense that ‘America is really just for white people,’ and many people believe that God gave America to white people to rule, and every time immigrants and minorities make progress in this country, it’s seen as a slight against them,” he continued.

Both men agreed that whites are already, or nearly are, a minority in Texas, and Wu clarified that they currently remain a voting majority. The host then asked Wu to talk about his predominantly Latino district and the relationship between Latino and Asian communities, particularly immigrants from both groups.
“I think you’re right,” Wu said. “It’s not just Latinos. It’s not just Asians. It’s not just African Americans. It’s everyone. Right? We, our country and the powers that be, the powers that be, spend a lot of time and energy and money making sure that these groups never come together and they always see each other as enemies, as competitors, and never realize that they have one thing in common, that their oppressors are all the same. Oppression comes from one place.
“I always tell people, the day Latinos, African Americans, Asians and other communities realize they’re facing the same oppressor, that’s the day we start winning, because we are now the majority in this country,” he continued. “We have the ability to take over this country and do what everyone needs to do to make things fair.”
The 2024 comments resurfaced on social media, causing Wu to face backlash from fellow Texans.

“Gene Wu is a radical racist who hates millions of Texans simply because they are (white) white people. This is the modern Democratic Party,” Texas Attorney General and Republican Senate Candidate Ken Paxton writes.
former texas republican chairman Matt Rinaldi wrote, “This video has gone viral for its advocacy of white genocide. People need to realize that this is not some random Democratic backbencher. This is the leader of the Texas House Democratic Caucus.”
"The Democratic Party is built on bigotry," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, responded.
Rep. Chip Roy, Also from Texas, he called on Wu to resign.
“Unlike many Democrats, he admits to being racist against white people and calls for ‘taking over the country.’ He should resign or the Texas House should strip him of any power,” he wrote. “Another reason Pass my moratorium bill. Stop bringing in people who hate you. “
After facing backlash, Wu appeared to try to backtrack and claim he was not referring to white people, but to Republicans.
this Evan Mintz of the Houston Chroniclereported on the viral clip of the longer interview, noting that “Nowhere in the clip does Wu talk about (W) white people.”

However, the clip shown in the clip was preceded by Wu’s reference to “white people” and their racial anxieties about being a minority in America.
“For clarification, I even called Wu to ask who he meant by ‘co-oppressors,'” Mintz wrote. “His answer: Republicans.”
“It’s undeniable that Republicans have been attacking communities for the last 50 years,” Wu told the author.
“To their credit, some Republicans weighed in on Wu’s actual remarks, slamming him for first dividing the American people into different groups — and yes, he did that,” Mintz reported.
Wu’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
