president Donald Trump Ottawa threatened on Monday to block the opening of a bridge linking Michigan to Canada unless it negotiates with Washington over tariffs and exclusions of U.S. products.
Trump published a long article on “Truth Social” accusing Canada of taking advantage of the United States and currying favor with China through unfair trade practices.
In an effort to bring Canada back to the negotiating table, Trump said he would not allow the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, named for the legendary Canadian hockey player who played for the Detroit Red Wings. The bridge is currently under construction and will connect Detroit to Windsor, Ontario.
“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them and, importantly, canadian hospitality America gets the fairness and respect we deserve,” Trump wrote.

“We will start negotiations immediately. With everything we offer them, we should probably own at least half of this asset,” he added.
He cited the removal of U.S. alcohol products from shelves at Canadian liquor stores in Ontario.
Trump has previously accused Canada of taking advantage of U.S. trade policies. Trump said in the post that Canada had moved forward with construction of the bridge with “little to no American content.”

He accused former President Barack Obama of “foolishly” granting Canada exemptions so they could bypass the Buy American Act, which requires federal agencies to purchase materials made in the United States and made primarily from American-produced parts.
Trump accused Canada of not using American products, including steel.
“Now the Canadian government wants me, as President of the United States, to allow them to ‘take advantage of America!’ What the United States of America gets – absolutely nothing!” he wrote. “Ontario won’t even put the U.S. Spirits, drinksand other alcoholic products, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so on the shelves, and now, on top of that, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China – which will eat Canada alive. We just eat the leftovers! I don’t think so. “
