follow Apple Musiclatest advertisements of the Super Bowlyou may be wondering if you should sign up — and we have good news for people planning a switch. Apple Music subscribers can now get songs or playlists from other music platforms, specifically Spotifyand bring them at Apple. The feature was added just a few months ago, and since it’s buried in the settings of the Apple Music app, not many people know it exists.
Initially tested in Australia and New Zealand last year, this transfer option now rolled out in US, UK, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany and other countries. This is powered by the SongShift service, which will require access to the library you’re transferring music to. Here’s how it works and my own experience with the service.
How to start transferring your music to Spotify
Apple’s Music Transfer option isn’t working for me right now, but it’s being rolled out to major countries around the world.
Moving your playlists is simple if you know where to go. Here’s how to get started:
- Update all your apps, especially Apple Music and other streaming services you use.
- Make sure you’re subscribed to Apple Music, not just using your iTunes library.
- Select Apple’s Music app in your settings.
- Find the setting that says Transferring Music from Other Music Services and select it.
- Sign in to your preferred music streaming service from the Apple list.
- See the music options displayed by Apple and select the available playlists for transfer.
- selection Add to Library.
When SongShift completes the transfer, Apple Music will attempt to create a replica playlist or song selection based on its library. It will ask users to double-check some matches, and not every song may have a replacement version on Apple Music.
Apple Music now lets you transfer all your self-made playlists from other sources.
While the feature is available, it seems a little buggy right now. When I tried the Transfer Music button on my Apple devicesit was accompanied and said, “Once the current transfer is complete, you can start another.” The problem is that I haven’t started transferring any songs.
When I tried my computer browser, I could switch from my Tidal account. However, Spotify said, “Currently busy, try again later,” a cryptic message that prevented me from trying any Spotify transfers.
While it looks like SongShift has knots to work out, if it works, Spotify users should be able to transfer their playlists and perhaps their entire subscriptions to Apple.
Why switch to Apple Music at all?
This new transfer option can open up more opportunities for listeners. Families who use two music services, such as Spotify and Apple Music, can now coordinate music more easily.
CNET writer Aaron Prunerwhich creates hundreds of streaming-music playlists on Spotify and Apple Music, says it solves some of his problems.
“I have an Android that doesn’t work on my HomePod. My wife has an iPhone,” Pruner said. “Making some playlists accessible and playable on both of our phones through a streaming platform would be something we might need.”
He also touched on the limitations of his current setup. “Being on a Spotify family plan was cool until I tried to listen to Kendrick Lamar in the car, only to find out it was brought into my daughter’s room because she was also listening to Spotify at the same time,” Pruner said.
Final notes on transferring Apple Music from Spotify
Apple’s switch feature makes it easy to ditch Spotify entirely and switch to Apple Music, which may be a goal for some customers. Spotify made news last year for allowing AI to imitate existing artists (one thing many music services are struggling). Many indie artists like King Gizzard and Deerhoof to leave Spotify of its CEO’s AI military investments.
However, please note that results will depend on the overlap between their music selections on other platforms and what Apple Music already offers. I suggest holding off on canceling any service until you complete your transfers and check what Apple service will replace. You may find some holes in your favorite playlists when the move is complete, so stay patient and see how it works.
