OpenAI has started testing ads on ChatGPT

Users of ChatGPT’s free and Go plans in the US can now start seeing ads as OpenAI has begun testing its chatbot. The company announces plans to bring ads to ChatGPT. At the time, the company said it would show sponsored products and services related to current conversations with logged-in users, although they could disable personalization and “clear data used for ads” if they wanted.

“Our goal is to support ads with broader access to ChatGPT’s more powerful features while maintaining the trust people place in ChatGPT for important and personal tasks,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post. “We started a test to learn, listen and make sure we get the experience right.”

These ads appear below the chats. They are labeled and separated in ChatGPT responses. Ads have no effect on ChatGPT responses.

Ads will not appear when users are communicating on ChatGPT about regulated or sensitive topics such as health, mental health or politics. Users under 18 will not see ads on ChatGPT during trials. Additionally, OpenAI says it will not share or sell users’ conversations or data with advertisers.

A source close to the company said CNBC that OpenAI expects ads to account for less than half of its revenue in the long run. Currently the company is also taking a cut of items purchased through its chatbot through procurement integration part. Also according to CNBCOpenAI CEO Sam Altman told staff on Friday that the company will deploy “an updated Chat model” this week.

The tests come on the heels of Anthropic running Super Bowl ads that mocked OpenAI for introducing advertising. It’s anthropic SITES stated that while “ads are coming to AI,” they invisible chatbot itself, Claude.
