Scotland made history by becoming the first associate nation to score more than 200 runs in a T20 World Cup. Scotland achieved this special milestone at the 2026 T20 World Cup on February 9 against debutants Italy at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

After being asked to bat first by Italy, Scotland put on a brilliant show and ended with a total of 207/4 in 20 overs thanks to George MuncyAt Eden Gardens, he scored 84 runs off 54 balls with 13 big boundaries and 2 sixes.
As well as Muncy’s brilliant fifty, Michael Jones (37) and Brendan McMullen (41*) also made valuable contributions in helping Scotland achieve a strong finish at the top of the charts.

At the end of the innings, Michael Leask stole the show with his unbeaten 22 off just five balls, hitting two boundaries and hitting the most full runs in the group stage match against Italy at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Scotland creates T20 World Cup history as they cross 200-run mark
Scotland posted a total of 207/4 against Italy, becoming the first team to score more than 200 runs in a T20 World Cup match. In addition, they also surpassed the best score by a joint team in T20 World Cup history, which was 197 points scored by the United States against Canada in 2024.
Excellent batting performance as Scotland tops league’s highest batting totals chart team T20 World Cup. The list also includes Canada’s 5-for-194 against the United States in 2024 and the Netherlands’ 4-for-193 against Ireland in 2014.
Scotland opener sets second-largest crowd in T20 World Cup history
The strong start played a major role in their record-breaking total. Scotland openers Muncy and Jones combined for a memorable 126 against Italy. The stand currently has the second-highest combined opening partnership in T20 World Cup history.
Omani Aqib Ilyas Jatinder Singh’s unbeaten 131 against Papua New Guinea in 2021 remains the highest-grossing opening partnership in the history of the T20 World Cup. Scotland sent a strong message to the world with their fearless batting performance.

Scotland seize opportunity after late
Meanwhile, Scotland are participating in the ongoing 2026 T20 World Cup as replacements for Bangladesh after they decided to travel to India for the tournament. They have made a huge impact in the tournament so far. Scotland had a stellar performance against the West Indies in the tournament opener.
They fought till the 19th over but were 35 runs short of the target of 183 against the West Indies. However, Scotland made a strong comeback and beat Italy by 73 runs in the second match of the 2026 T20 World Cup, perfectly avenging last year’s qualifying defeat.
Brendan McMullen praises George Muncy and Michael Lesk
Brendan McMullen said during the break: “It was a really good performance from the team. I thought George Muncy did a great job and Michael Jones set the total for us at the back and allowed us to go out and express ourselves. Really happy to go off in the middle stages.”
He added, “Michael Lesk is our X-factor player and he played a top-notch innings and showed what he can do for us.” Talking about his experience, McMullen said: “I think this is the World Cup on the greatest stage of our game, so I’m excited to get out there and hopefully put in a good performance.”
