Thomas Frank says Tottenham Hotspur are “hungry” to win as they prepare to face Newcastle in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
Tottenham’s winless run in league extended to seven games Lost 2-0 to Manchester United on Saturday.
Their last Premier League win came on December 28, when Archie Gray scored in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park – and you have to go back to December 6, when they won their last home win in the league, when they beat Brentford 2-0.
Likewise, their midweek opponents are winless in four league games.
“There’s no doubt we’re hungry to win this game, really hungry,” Frank said.
“That’s how it should feel when we haven’t won enough.
“The way I work – and we’re all different – is that if you don’t win enough, you do the best you can and you actually do a little bit more, you work harder. You just know that’s the way to get out of the tough moments.
“That’s what I expect from the players and actually I think that’s what I saw from the players. They ran hard and that’s why I was angry that we couldn’t get anything out of the Manchester United game.
“I believe if it’s 11 against 11 we can get something out of it.
“We haven’t won enough – you need desperation because if you’re not desperate you don’t understand the situation you’re in.
“That’s what we want for the fans, that’s what we want for the team, for the club.”
The Dane sidestepped the question of whether Spurs are in a relegation battle, with just six points separating them from 18th-placed West Ham United.
“My focus is on Newcastle tomorrow (Tuesday),” he said. “This is a great opportunity for us to face a good team.
“That’s the most important thing. Can we go out and get three points tomorrow? That would be really good and then climb from there. Going forward, that’s what we need to do. That’s the main focus.”
“I think we have (the ability to get out of this situation). Having a lot of players out certainly doesn’t help.
“But I thought I actually put a very competitive team against Manchester United and we looked good in the first 30 minutes.
“We lost two players tomorrow (Christian Romero and Destiny Udoji), but Jed Spence is back and (Radu) Dragusin is back and looking good.
“I know we’re going to field a very competitive team tomorrow as well and then hopefully more teams will come back after that, but let’s see.”
Frank: Romero needs to learn from red card
Frank was asked if Tottenham captain Romero was a leader or a liability after receiving a red card against Manchester United.
“We talked enough about Romero in the last press conference,” Frank said. “For me, he is a leader. I said before, he is a young leader who is learning every day.
“I gave you the example of when I was 30 years old and I thought I was on top of the world – I was nowhere near where I am today in terms of leadership and understanding things.
“When you have players who are passionate and aggressive, sometimes, things like that happen.
“That’s not to say he shouldn’t learn from it. Of course, he needs to learn from it in the future.”
Udogie to take another month off; Kulusevski return date unknown
Frank also confirmed that Udoji will be sidelined again with a hamstring injury.
The 23-year-old, who missed December with a hamstring injury, featured in Tottenham’s last three games but came off after 55 minutes in the defeat to Manchester United.
“Unfortunately, Destiny has a hamstring injury, so he’s going to be out for the next four to five weeks,” Frank said.
He also provided an update.
“Kevin has met with consultants. Going forward, it will be a few weeks before he is available,” he said.
“(Kulusevski) has another date this weekend and we’ll know more.
“But him being left out of the Champions League squad shows that tomorrow is not tomorrow.”
Asked if Kulusevski could return before the end of the season, Frank added: “I don’t know.”
