Scotland eased to first victory in T20 World Cup with a commanding 73-run win over Italy at Eden Gardens

Italy, who were playing for the first time, suffered a major blow early in the Scotland innings when captain Wayne Madsen was dismissed injured.

The 42-year-old suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder while trying to stop George Muncy’s four-pointer and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Muncy then scored 84 and shared 126 for the first wicket with Michael Jones, who contributed 37 runs.

Michael Leask’s knock of 22 off 5 balls capped off the innings as Scotland, beaten by West Indies in the first over, ended the innings at 207 for 4.

Lisk then took the first ball of Italy’s opener Justin Mosca, taking four wickets for Italy. Muncy took a brilliant diving catch for the first wicket off the first ball.

Despite Ben Manetti’s 52 runs, Italy were eliminated by 134 runs.

Benjamin and his brother Harry Manenti (37) briefly threatened to overshoot the target with a score of 73, but then both fell in succession as Italy conceded their last six wickets for 21 runs.

“I think everyone will be frustrated and disappointed in the dressing room,” vice-captain Harry Mananti said.

“We want to show the world what we have. We’ll get another chance in a few days and hopefully we can bounce back.”

An under-prepared Scotland team replaced Bangladesh and lost their first match to the West Indies at the same venue, but fought back strongly to pick up their first points of the tournament.

Scotland were originally absent after losing to Italy in the qualifiers, but were later selected as substitutes for Bangladesh in Group C. The International Cricket Council rejected the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s request to move the match from India to Sri Lanka due to security concerns.

“It’s really important for us to bounce back strong,” Scotland captain Richie Bellington said. “It’s a comprehensive win, but you have to work hard for it.

“We will enjoy this win and then we will start preparing for the game against England.”
