Chris Eubank Jr. could return to boxing at super middleweight with a chance to challenge for a world title.
Eubank Jr. had a long career filled with high-profile fights, but despite holding the under-appreciated IBO belt, he never won a world title.
Eubank recently headlined Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with two middleweight bouts against Connor Benn that came with a fight-day rehydration clause. He won the first game and lost the second.
It was widely believed he had lost weight, and Eubank Jr. said he had “issues” that needed to be restored.
He will likely return to the ring at super middleweight, and at 168 pounds, he will have a chance to compete for a world title.
Terrence Crawford defeats Canelo Alvarez to become the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world. Crawford has now retired, and the new champion will take over the 168-pound belt.
The WBC has promoted Christian Mbili to super middleweight world champion. With Alvarez ranked No. 1, the Mexican superstar could face off against Mbili.
Eubank Jr. could also end up fighting either Mbili or Alvarez for the WBC title.
“Absolutely. Chris Eubank is a great fighter. I believe he has sacrificed too much at weight and he is a natural fighter in this division. Huge potential. Super fighter,” said WBC president Mauricio Suleiman sky sports.
“There’s no doubt he’s a world-class boxer.”
He added: “We will work it out in the next few weeks and see what happens with Mbili and the division. Of course, Canelo, (Jaime) Munguia, Lester Martinez, Luka Plantic. There are a lot of fighters who could put up a good fight for the champion Mbili.
“Mbili was an amazing kid with a great story behind him, from Cameroon to France to Canada. He won the WBC Continental Americas title, defending it eight times. He then won the interim title and defended it in Fight of the Year against Lester Martinez, and the WBC ordered him to fight (Hamza) Sheraz. When Sheraz took the other direction, the WBC voted in favor of naming him WBC World Champion.”
Ilford’s Sheraz is in a good position to challenge for the WBO super middleweight world title and is expected to win it. Sheeraz promoter Frank Warren also issued a challenge to Eubank Jr.
Eubank Jr. will have the opportunity to challenge for the highest level of honors. Warren welcomes Sheraz vs. Eubank Jr. matchup.
“I would do this all day long. All day long. I would bet my house on Hamza’s job,” Warren told sky sports.
“Let’s see what happens. Or if he wants to step up again, Connor Benn, please do so immediately. Any one.”
While Eubank wants to fight again, he can’t say when. He said late last year: “I won’t box again until I’m back to 100 per cent, and I don’t know when that will be.
“But one thing is for sure,” he added, “for the fans who have supported me all the way, I will do my best to make sure that one day the old me can come back.”
