Super Bowl Tailgate Photo Essay: Bad Bunny, Big Tech, and the Big Game

Jim Lockhart, from Boston:

Did you travel to get here today?

Yes, we arrived early on Friday morning. Planes, trains, and cars from Logan Airport.

And where do you live?

The Intercontinental, right in San Fran, downtown.

Nice. I’m from San Francisco, born and raised, so I have a lot of pride in the city. Hope you enjoyed your stay.

Oh, you know what? They did an incredible job. San Fran is very welcoming. Everything is great. Friendly bartenders, waitresses, concierge, Uber guys. Everything is great, man. They did a great job. The city grew. We went to Alcatraz yesterday, and what an experience. We like it. Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, everything. It was a wonderful experience.

What are you most excited about?

I’m excited to see the game. I am excited to win money below.

I just wanted to ask you. Yes, did you bet today?

Of course I did. I bet everything. The coin toss, the Gatorade, everything. The first pass, everyone. I owe it to you.

Do you do any prediction markets?

So you can’t bet here on Draft Kings. This is a wonderful thing. So I had to place all my bets on the bookie. Offline.

Do you have any thoughts about the potential of ICE agents in the area?

No, I’m from Boston, you know? We love ICE. In my drinks and in the streets. Let’s go. Let’s hide the borders, close them.

And do you have any thoughts about Bad Bunny?

I think it’s disgusting to have a guy who doesn’t speak English playing in the Super Bowl, at THE America’s biggest sporting event. And there was a man singing who couldn’t speak English, and he also said he was going to leave America and never come here again. My kids love him and more. I don’t even know him enough to, like, form an opinion, but if he sings in Spanish and stuff, I mean, come on.

Are you going to watch the halftime show?

No. I’m going to go.

Do you walk out?

I go to the beer line. To protest. I know it doesn’t make a difference, but, you know?

Have you been in a driverless car since you’ve been here?

We are trying to get those, but they seem to make me nervous. You know what I mean? It’s scary for me to watch a car go by without someone driving the car. But we took the scooters last night. So we were, like, Sons of Anarchy on these scooters last night. It’s very nice. That was a lot of fun.

You have scooters in Boston, right?

We did. I haven’t gotten one yet. We left a bar yesterday—a Patriots bar, a party—and we took them back to our hotel.

If you get a chance to ride a Waymo before you leave, I think it’s a fun experience for a tourist.
