Here’s what it looked like on Monday, February 9:

- Russian forces launched a “massive” airstrike on the Ukrainian port city of Odessa, killing at least one person, officials said.

Russian forces also attacked facilities of Naftogaz, Ukraine’s main oil and gas company. Eastern region of Poltava Overnight, the damage was done. The company said in a statement that this was Moscow’s 19th attack on the facility, but did not specify the extent of the damage.
- According to Russian state media, Russian troops claimed to have captured the settlements of Hluskivka in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine and Sidorivka in the Sumy region.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian energy infrastructure is a “legitimate target” for attacks in Ukraine because the Russian energy sector is the source of funds for the production of weapons.
- Zelensky also said that in the past week, Russia launched more than 2,000 attack drones, 1,200 guided air bombs and 116 missiles of various types towards Ukrainian cities and villages.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andry Sibiha said the leaders of Ukraine and Russia needed to meet in person to resolve the thorniest remaining issues in peace talks and that only U.S. President Donald Trump had the power to reach a deal to end the four-year war.

Sibiha said that judging from the 20-point peace plan that formed the basis of recent trilateral negotiations, only a “few” items have yet to be resolved, but the “most sensitive and difficult” items must be dealt with at the leadership level.

Sibiha added that if a ceasefire is reached, the United States has told Ukraine it is prepared to approve security guarantees in Congress and will then provide security “backstop” to support the peace deal, although the United States will not deploy troops inside Ukraine.

Sibiha also said countries other than France and Britain had confirmed their willingness to send troops to Ukraine as a deterrent if a deal was reached.
