completion better than expected opening weekend in theaters, box office for “Melania” on Amazonfell 67%to an estimated $2.37 million, in its second week.
The documentary about First Melania Trump has grown for a total of $13.5 million so far (almost all of that in the United States), which means it’s highly unlikely that the film – which cost Amazon $40 million to acquire and $35 million to sell – will break even in theaters.
Before the release of “Melania”, a former film executive at Amazon asks how the price tag can represent anything else rather than “favoring” the Trump administration or “a direct bribe.”
Movie theaters typically slow during Super Bowl weekend, but the weekend’s highest-grossing film, “Send Help,” was down just 47%. And after placing third on the charts last week, “Melania” is ninth this time.
Perhaps anticipating the discussion about the film’s decline, Amazon released a statement from the head of domestic theatrical distribution Kevin Wilson, who said, “Together, theatrical and streaming represent two distinct value-creating moments that amplify the overall impact of the film.”
“Melania” received generally negative reviews from criticsbut the 99% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is so good that the site released a statement insisting the score was real.
