Herzel’s success or failure?

The underlying numbers highlight some of their recent issues.

The recent poor results have coincided with a surge in their expected goals numbers, exposing the fragility of the defence. Meanwhile, their five-game expected goals average is trending in the opposite direction.

The result was that the team conceded more chances than they created for the first time since Huizele’s first few months in charge last season, despite some improvement over the past two games. Brighton had better chances against both Fulham and Everton.

Of course, that’s little consolation to fans who watched their teams score costly stoppage-time goals in those games. But that might at least help explain Hezler’s optimism that they’re on the verge of returning to their previous level of performance.

Of course, his team will need to be convincing on the pitch and will obviously need to be more imaginative on the ball.

Brighton are sixth among Premier League teams to have made 10 or more passes this season, with 258, but none have resulted in a goal.

They need to do better against a Palace side who tend to give away possession. The Seagulls were beaten in the same game last season with 65% possession. They also need to find clinical advantages. Scoring goals has become a common problem.

Brighton exceeded expectations last season, scoring 66 goals against an expected total of 59.15. This season, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction.

They scored nearly four goals less than expected. Only bottom side Wolves and Sunday’s opponents Crystal Palace have a wider gap in their expected performance.

Huzzele insisted this week that he was not jealous of Crystal Palace’s spending on forwards in January following the club-record signings of Brennan Johnson and Jorgen Strand-Larsen. But some frustration is understandable. Brighton still rely on Danny Welbeck.

The 35-year-old has scored eight Premier League goals. The purple patch earlier this season sparked talk of a recall in England. But his output has dried up of late, which is a problem as no other Brighton player has scored more than three points.

The only available replacements for Huzelle up front are the exciting but raw Charalampos Kostoulas, who is only 18 and in his first season in England, and Georginio Rutter, a player most Brighton fans believe is better suited to the No. 10 role.

Huerzeller could also point to the team’s lack of depth on the wings, where injuries to Jankuba Minter and Mito Mahaon have proven to be an issue. Brighton are the sixth player to miss more than six days due to injury in the Premier League this season, with Yassin Ayari the latest to suffer the injury.

In other words, there are some mitigating factors for Herzler. But given their recent record, Brighton have only beaten Crystal Palace twice in 13 Premier League games, and dropping more points against Crystal Palace would be even more difficult for fans to accept.

Will Strand Larson step up?

If Brighton have had a tough time lately, what about Crystal Palace?

In less than a month, they became the first Premier League team to be beaten by sixth-tier opponents in the FA Cup, losing to Manchester City on the eve of the game and having their manager confirm his departure at the end of the season. Nine consecutive Premier League games without a win.

They head to the Amex Stadium hoping a late January addition can help spark a turnaround. Evan Gersang arrived on loan from Aston Villa ahead of Wolves’ Strand Larsson, but it was the Norwegian they were counting on.

For a player who has scored just once in 22 appearances for Wolves this season, a transfer fee of £48 million seems steep.
