Apple is reportedly allowing third-party AI assistants in CarPlay

Apple plans to allow third-party voice-controlled AI apps in CarPlay, Bloomberg reports. Siri is the default voice assistant for things like controlling music and finding directions, but future AI apps in CarPlay will be able to handle complex, open-ended requests that Siri can’t answer.

The extended support will allow developers like OpenAI or Google to offer versions of their ChatGPT and Gemini apps for CarPlay. The same functionality is possible by simply connecting a smartphone to a car via Bluetooth and using the AI app’s voice mode, but CarPlay support will likely make the process much smoother.

It doesn’t quite seamlessly replace Siri, though. Bloomberg wrote that these third-party apps cannot replace the Siri button in the CarPlay interface or use their own words to wake up (“Hey Google,” etc.). However, anyone who wants to spend a long trip talking to Gemini will have to open the app first. That might reduce the utility of using one of these apps, but Apple probably wants to get Siri to a place where CarPlay users want it as their car assistant.

Apple and Google recently announced that Gemini will power future versions of Siri and Apple Foundation Models, the AI models that underpin Apple Intelligence. the delayed, updated version of Siri Apple introduced with Apple Intelligence in 2024 should be able to perform actions for the user, work across apps and understand the context of what is on the screen, all things Gemini can do now. Reports suggest that Apple wants to eventually use Google’s Gemini models to replace Siri a proper conversational chatbottoo. That future version of the voice assistant could be at home in CarPlay.
