This mattress pad offers a little cushion with a quilted surface, but not nearly as much as a mattress topper. It’s meant to be more of a deluxe mattress protector than anything else. But for competitive athletes who may find their mattress to be agreeable but want more padding, they can easily forget about the topper and use the pad instead. If not, you can throw it on top of the mattress, but that’s a small pillow for me and the elastic sides may stretch, depending on the height of your mattress.
A Soft Pillow
Hotel pillows often seem too soft or too firm. The Saatva latex pillows included in this bundle meant to be a good middle ground. I found the standard-loft option to be very mushy, which isn’t a bad thing, but you’ll have to know yourself as a sleeper to decide if it’s best for you. If you want a higher loft because you sleep on your side, have wider shoulders, or want to preserve cervical alignment, a higher loft option is available (about 6 to 7 inches). As for the standard loft (4 to 5 inches), I’m a combination sleeper who adores a flatter, more malleable pillow that fits me, whether I sleep on my side, stomach, or back.
The soft, “mushy” feel comes from a shredded latex core, surrounded by an organic cotton cover and microdenier fibers that mimic feathers. Latex is a hypoallergenic, bouncy material that helps relieve pressure and is heat resistant. All these qualities are present in these pillows, but if you are a really strong pillow person, you will not be happy with these pillows.
Final Score
All in all, the Winter Sleep Accessories bundle runs $940 for queen-size itemsincluding two pillows, the mattress topper, the mattress pad, and the sheet set. You have to buy all the items in the bundle individually, but I prefer this method. Sleep is deeply personal and, frankly, an investment. A mattress topper comes in handy when you need to get more support from your bed but aren’t ready to replace it completely. Pillows wear out more quickly than you might think, and I think these latex ones in the bundle are great for stomach and combination sleepers if they’re not too soft. I’m always an advocate of a mattress protector, but I think you can skip the mattress pad in this case—unless you’re already a fan of them. Finally, the plates are durable and can be used on alternative bestseller bundle (pillow, sheet, mattress) if that’s up your alley.
I’ll be watching the Games here soon and reporting more on what Saatva is doing in preparation for LA28. In the meantime, go Team USA, and here’s to all of us, near and far, sleeping better.
