MS Dhoni is the most successful captain in world cricket; he remains the only captain to date to win all three international ICC trophies as captain of the Indian team. He has retired from international cricket and continues to play only in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni, 44, has defied age with his fitness and continues to showcase his brilliant cricketing acumen on the field in the cash-rich league.
The legend was recently spotted chatting with sports broadcaster, anchor and commentator Jatin Sapru at the Mahi Unplugged event. In this conversation, he was asked about many things, whether he ever came to the commentary field and why he never left his hometown Ranchi like many cricketers do after becoming successful and moving to the metropolis. Despite traveling the world and spending time in Chennai during the IPL, he returned to his home city.
Jatin Sapru may have taken a slight dig at Virat Kohli, who hails from Delhi and is now settled in London, when he asked Ms Dhoni this question.
MS Dhoni has a deep connection with Ranchi
Replying to the question, MS Dhoni said: “Well, I am a small city boy to a great extent and interestingly, in 2004 I made my debut in December and in mid-May 2005, I had some contact with a senior cricketer.”
Your daily dose of cricket!
“You know, so he asked me, okay, when are you moving out of Ranchi? So if a senior asks, you know, you take it seriously, there must be something. So like, why should I move? So he was like, no, it’s not that easy to live in a small city, you know. So I said, no, no, I’m happy there. You know, I don’t have a good reason to move out. It’s well connected. We have an airport and there are very few flights that take me to Delhi and Mumbai.”

“20 years later, you know, I’m still there” – MS Dhoni
“If I needed to go anywhere, I could start from there and the train connections were really good. He just smiled at me and said, OK, we’ll talk next year. Now, 20 years later, you know, I’m still there. I love the city. I have very fond memories of Ranchi.”
“I saw the city growing in its own way. You know, although I lived in a colony, it was a self-sufficient colony, but it had everything from hospitals to community halls for showing films, grounds, libraries, everything worked together, everything was there. So I didn’t have a good reason to leave the colony. Once I started playing cricket, I explored Ranchi more and somehow I loved it.”
MS Dhoni concluded: “You know, I can probably come in and out of my house 10 times a day, which is not possible in the metro. You know, I actually talked to a lot of cricketers who live in Mumbai and they said if we have to go to the office, and not all of them are Indian players.” Dhoni is often spotted enjoying time at his home in Ranchi, practicing on his bike and also driving across the city.
