I’ve Tried Dozens of Cordless Vacuums — Dyson’s PencilVac Is the Best.

Cordless vacuums are lighter than STAND or corded vacuums but still have heavy cleaning power. Some of the best cordless vacuums I’ve tried are from Dyson. The company appears prominently in our list of best cordless vacuumswhich get spaces for dust evaporation and wet-dry mopping, although its models tend to be on the more expensive side.

Dyson is new PencilVacwhich is now available for sale in the US, is different. As the name suggests, the PencilVac is shaped like a pencil. It’s like holding a broom rather than a vacuum. It’s also the lightest and thinnest cordless vacuum I’ve ever used, measuring just 38 millimeters in diameter and weighing less than 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms). The entire motor (a Hyperdymium 140k motor) is small enough to fit in the handle, which is no bigger than the rest of the vacuum.

While cordless vacuums are easier to maneuver than the corded onesthey can be quite heavy, with some weighing as much as 12 pounds, and even the lighter ones usually weigh about 6 or 7 pounds.

Using PencilVac

Swiping the brush head’s rollers around the wooden floor in Dyson’s showroom takes a bit of effort, and part of that comes from the design of the brush head. Instead of a standard single or dual brush roller, the PencilVac has four conical brush bars (in an array of two on each side). It is designed to release hair as it is picked up and prevent it from wrapping and tangling the brush bars. The front bar rotates in one direction while the backs rotate in the opposite direction, in theory making cleaning more comprehensive.

The trash can fills up quickly, but it can be emptied quickly

I quickly used Dyson’s showroom vacuum to clean the biscuit crumbs off the floor. Green LED lights are a feature you’ll find on the Dyson V15 Detect as well, and they make it easy to spot dust and other debris. The mess is clean in a few swipes, with the dustbin successfully combining the crumbs into a tightly packed mass. It was interesting to see all the dirt collected right on top of the garbage can. Dyson claims that despite having a 0.08-liter capacity, the new dustbin design can pack five times more dust and debris into the same space.

The dust will be packed in a tightly packed mass, saving you space.

That may be true, but I noticed that the trash can quickly filled up and required quick emptying between each demonstration. For reference, the average size of a dustbin in a cordless vacuum is usually between 0.5 liters on the small end and as much as one liter on the larger end.

I just can’t see the PencilVac being a prime vacuum for big people households with pets and children, although it can be a nice supplement to a more basic vacuum because it is light and easy to use.

Release the vacuum like a syringe

In addition, emptying the dustbin is easy with a unique plunger-style ejection system that allows you to eject dust directly into the bin without having to shake or tap the dustbin. Some tools are included, such as the combi-crevice and conical hair screw tool, and can lend it more to light cleaning tasks, by helping you get into tight spaces and awkward gaps and pull the hair out of the carpetssofas and mattresses.

The PencilVac has a magnetic charging dock, but unlike some competitors such as Shark Clean & Emptyit is not empty of itself. It’s also Dyson’s first connected vacuum, allowing you to pair it with the MyDyson app to monitor things like battery life and filter maintenance.

Price and availability

The Dyson PencilVac is available in the US by Dyson for $599. The price makes it less expensive than the top-tier models in the Dyson line, such as $850 The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute and $1,150 More than Gen5 (at full price), but more expensive than most of our top picks for cordless vacuums like $180 Eureka ReactiSense 440. I’m looking forward to testing it out in our Louisville lab to see how it compares to other thin and light options as well as better performance cleaning models.
