As big as it is VR/XR could be, there are many things that are not good. There’s the whole wearing a big thing on your face long time side, or the bad battery life side, or the side where there’s a headset with OLED display very expensive In that laundry list of faucets, however, there’s one inconvenience lost in the mix: typing.

Typing on the VR/XR is a tedious nightmare; It doesn’t matter how you do it, either. Using hand tracking to get each individual letter is not good, and so is using a controller. Okay, hand tracking is worse, but still, it’s not good.

Tired typing is just a simple fact of the XR/VR experience for anyone who’s spent enough time in a headset, so Meta’s new beta software for Finding 3 made some waves. In Horizon OS v85 PTC, Meta sports what they call the Surface Keyboard. The Surface Keyboard feature is exactly what it sounds like: an XR keyboard that you can practically pin to the surface and use to type things. There’s also a virtual trackpad attached to the right side for use with a surface that looks like it’s touch sensitive.

Naturally, as someone who doesn’t want to type in XR, I tried the feature, and let me tell you — Meta might have broken the code here.

To test the Surface Keyboard, you must download the latest beta software and enable the feature in the experimental section of the Horizon OS settings. Once it’s there, the feature is simple to use. The Surface Keyboard uses the Quest 3’s external cameras to create a virtual keyboard on a flat surface, and all you have to do to summon the keyboard (once it’s activated) is place your hands on the surface you want.

Using the previous typing method (diligently poking at the XR keyboard, it’s like I’ve never used a keyboard in my life) and the Surface Keyboard back-to-back, the experience couldn’t be more different. I can actually use both hands to type things on the Surface Keyboard like God intended, making the typing process faster yet more accurate. Don’t get me wrong, nothing comes close to the words every minute that I know to be true, physical keyboardbut it’s the closest thing to replicating the XR experience I’ve used yet. I don’t want to drop my headset into the nearest body of water, at least.

Better typing might not seem like a mind-blowing addition, but the experience is night and day compared to other XR keyboards. Yes, it still requires a face, which is less convenient than being able to call a keyboard anywhere at any time, but if you need to do critical things like typing a Wi-Fi password or searching for something on the web, it is worth taking a second to move to a desk or table where you can put your hands flat.

There is a dark spot, however. As good as the Surface Keyboard is, the trackpad could definitely use some work. It registered my inputs correctly sometimes—about 40% of the time, maybe—but the rest of the time it overshoots or undershoots swipes or fails to register taps. Let’s just say there’s significant room for improvement here, which is fair since these are experimental features, after all.

Whether the Surface Keyboard will make it to the next official version of Horizon OS is anyone’s guess, but given how useful and well-designed the feature is, I’d be surprised if it didn’t. Meta maybe in a bad place in VR right nowbut if I’m honest, its keyboard is better than before.
