BBC senior international correspondent Orla Guerin joins specialist police on a mission in Colombia’s cocaine heartland to dismantle crude cocaine labs hidden deep in the jungle.

The Jungle Commandos, a police force armed by the United States and originally trained by the British Special Air Service (SAS), were on the lookout for laboratories, which were nothing more than shacks filled with chemicals and fresh coca leaves ready to be turned into a paste.

Major Cristian Cedano Díaz, a veteran of the 16-year drug war, told the BBC that the cocaine lab could be rebuilt quickly, “in just one day”.

US President Donald Trump criticized Colombia for not doing enough to combat the drug trade, despite claims by Colombian President Gustavo Petro that the Colombian government has seized the largest quantity of drugs in history.
