Shakur Stevenson demanded a showdown with Connor Benn after his win on Saturday. Now, Carl Froch weighs in on how he thinks the potential dud will play out.
Stevenson used a stellar performance to defeat Teofimo Lopez by a wide margin at Madison Square Garden to capture the WBO super lightweight world title, becoming a four-division world champion in the process.
However, despite expectations that the Newark southpaw will now return to lightweight to defend his WBC 135-pound crown, the 28-year-old at the time British welterweight Conor Benn competeswho is eyeing the belt in the 147-pound division.
talking about his YouTube channelFour-time super middleweight ruler Carl Froch denied Ben a chance at the fight.
“No one gave Connor Benn a chance at all and you can see why.
“Conor Benn is still learning on the job, he has never fought for the English, British, Commonwealth or European title, he has never fought for the world title.
“He had a good win against Chris Algieri and he’s had two big fights against Chris Eubank Jr., but in my opinion he’s not ready to face an opponent like them.”
However, “The Cobra” went on to explain that he does believe that Benn has what it takes to earn world honors once he competes in a few more world-class fights.
“Conor needs a few solid fights around the world before he challenges for the world title, and I like him to get a few fights against a guy like Ryan Garcia or maybe (Mario) Barrios, who I think are winnable fights.”
Barrios and Garcia square off in just over two weeks, with the WBC world title on the line and Ben admits he plans to fight the winner, Or maybe WBA champion Rolando Romeroin his next game, although he didn’t shy away from Stevenson’s challenge.
